Weather

Time Zone
The time zone in Leicester in July is British Summer Time (BST) which is one (+1) hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Banks and Currency Exchange
The currency of England is GBP Sterling (£). You will find cash machines/ATMs on the University campus and nearby. There is also a branch of Santander bank on campus.
Smoking
Since 1 July 2007, smoking is not allowed in any enclosed public places in England (this includes pubs, clubs, restaurants, bus stations, shops etc).
Alcohol
Alcohol may be bought by anyone over the age of 18, with proof of identification.
Customs
There are certain restrictions on what you may bring into UK aside from your own personal effects. There are regulations concerning pets, livestock, firearms, prescription drugs, plants and meat products. Electricity
English appliances operate on 230 volts (50Hz). Electrical plugs for 230 volts are three rectangular prongs that form a triangle. If these are different from the ones used in your country, you will need a socket converter/ plug adaptor.
VAT Information
The rate of VAT for goods and services in the UK is 20%. Restaurants generally include VAT in their menu prices.
